My first blog post! and i am quite pleased with myself. I wrote this blog application from scratch using Ruby on Rails, its kind of an experiment, i get to try out new features, and generally use this site to mess around with.
In addition the XHTML and CSS that are used to make the layout are also a first for me. You'll notice that the grass always sticks to the bottom of the site, and the page grows from the middle instead of the bottom. This took some time to get working, and is still not 100%.
If you have any issues with the site not working 100% either graphically or functionally, i would really appreciate you letting me know.

Love the tree - but more seriously: well impressed with the Ruby skills.

I like your blog. It helped a lot with some rails issues. I wonder if you supply a search feature that would be very helpful. Keep on the good job!

Just had to say, very nice looking blog. Love the grass/tree on the bottom!

(1) I found your blog when looking to solve the <select_tag> in Rails. I spent over 5 hours trying to figure out why the selection was not passing back to the controller and getting updated in the database like all the other columns. Your site SOLVED it for me in 5 minutes! I owe you. (2) I am new to Ruby and would like to add a blog to my current Ruby-built website. I alraedy have a template with menu navigation at the top. It is a 2-column template, and I want to put the blog in the left 70% column. Can you offer some suggestions on how to add a blog? Is there a gem for this or is it all custom code? Thanks for your help!

@zangra - Glad I could be of assistance, I think a search facility is a great idea. I have a couple of projects on at the moment, but when they're cleared search will be top of my list! @Maxpenguin - cheers. @Bryan Thompson - My site is all custom code, but I do intend to make it more generic, and offer it as a download at some point in the future. In the mean time, take a look at: http://media.rubyonrails.org/video/rails_take2_with_sound.mov it will get you a basic blog engine in no time.

Hey mate - Im relatively new to ruby on rails but Im looking into starting my own blog site for my mates and I to offload on. I plan on having an online text-editor that we can write the blogs on and post them immediately. The one key thing I cant seem to sort out is how to take data generated by a JS text edior and store it as formatted text. Could you please offer some insight into the best way for me to take formatted text and store it to be viewed as blogs? thanks :)

Hi Gavin, using a js text editor is not something I have done with this blog, I just write the article in XHTML, and stick it in the database. Having said that, I have played around with <a href="http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/">TinyMCE</a> and used this <a href="http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/HowToUseTinyMCE">tutorial</a> along with Blake Watters's plugin, might be what your after. Good luck with the blog, can you post a link when its finished please, I'd love to see it.

Hi Gavin, thanks for posting back. Nice site, well done, I would have left this comment on one of your posts, but it didn't seem appropriate given the content :-) I noticed you didn't have any captcha on your comments, are you suffering from Spam? or have you found a way round it?
Gavin
Haha - yea So far I've had almost a thousand unique visitors and nobody has addded any comments yet :S Oh well. No issues with spam so far, but I've built the system so that comments require an IP address so I can easily block any IP that spams and remove the comments. -fingers crossed it wont be an issue. Thanks for getting back tho take care
Gavin
Hi again! Turns out spam has become a problem after all :S Where did you get the captcha that you're using on this site? Thanks

Hey Gavin, I used <a href="http://expressica.com/simple_captcha/">Simple Captcha</a>, its quick and easy, but requires RMagick and ImageMagick installed, check out my tutorial on how to install it <a href="http://shiningthrough.co.uk/Install+RMagick+and+ImageMagick+on+Leopard+OS+X+-+Quick+and+Simple" title="Install RMagick and ImageMagick on OS X Leopard">here</a> Good luck.
Gavin
Smashing Will install it when I get the chance. :) Thanks again

I like browsing your blog for the reason that you can constantly get us new and cool stuff, I feel that I should at least say thanks for your hard work. - Henry
